CMETB Announces Opening of Monaghan Community Special School

Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) is delighted to announce the successful opening of Monaghan Community Special School, located in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan.

The school officially welcomed its first group of students on Monday, 13 October 2025, marking an important milestone in CMETB’s ongoing commitment to inclusive education in the region.  Students, families, and the wider community have eagerly anticipated this exciting new chapter in local education.

Speaking about the achievement, CMETB Chief Executive, Dr Fiona McGrath said:

“We are immensely proud to see Monaghan Community Special School open and to welcome students into a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. This has been a true collaborative effort, involving close engagement with the Department of Education and Youth, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), families and stakeholders. Our focus was firmly on ensuring that everything was in place to give students the best possible start to their new school journey.”

The establishment of the school has been achieved in a remarkably short timeframe, following extensive coordination and teamwork. Regular engagement took place between CMETB, the Department of Education and Youth and local families to facilitate the school’s opening for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Since the summer, the school leadership team has been in place, led by Principal Ms. Belinda Walters and Deputy Principal Ms. Majella Nugent, and supported by a dedicated team including the school secretary, teachers, Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), ancillary staff and travel escorts, all eager to begin this new chapter.

CMETB remains committed to providing the highest quality teaching and learning facilities for Monaghan Community Special School. The long-term vision includes exploring opportunities for a new purpose-built school to meet future needs.

Principal, Belinda Walters shared her enthusiasm for the journey ahead:

“It is an incredible honour to welcome our students and families to Monaghan Community Special School. The joy and excitement among the children and staff on our first day was truly heartwarming. We look forward to building a school community where every child feels valued, supported and inspired to reach their full potential.”

Plans are underway for a special opening event to celebrate this significant milestone with students, families and the local community.
