CMETB host Education & Training Congress

Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) played host to over 200 leaders from across Ireland’s ETB Sector yesterday (09.10.25), as they gathered for Education and Training Boards Ireland’s annual congress in Cavan. Minister for Education & Youth, Helen McEntee TD, made her first address to the ETB Sector, and local learners, guests and delegates discussed the future of education & training in Ireland.

One of the key themes explored at ETBI’s congress – ‘Strengthening Governance, Managing Growth’ – was the national convention on education, which was announced by Minister Helen McEntee earlier this year. Delegates are heard from speakers and panellists on what they feel the convention needs to address, including special education, curriculum reform, the need for multi-denominational education, and wellbeing in schools.

Somer Finn, a 17-year-old student from Inver College in Carrickmacross, participated in a panel discussion on the national convention on education, and said she would like education “to adapt to what the students need, including those with additional needs” adding, “this can only start at the top.” Delegates also had a surprise performance from four CMETB learners, Grace Hamilton, Bebe Ukoeninn, Kerry Duffy and Neansai McDonnell, who’s spoken word piece entitled ‘Diary of a learner’ explored challenges and opportunities in primary and post primary schools, and further education and training.

Addressing congress delegates, Minister McEntee said: “I am delighted to attend my first ETBI Conference and to meet so many people committed to advancing greater equity in education. This week, I was pleased to announce €2 million in funding for the Convention on Education, which will provide a unique opportunity for children, young people, parents, educators and wider society to help shape the future of our education system.”

Over the course of the day, congress delegates addressed various other topics relevant to the sector, including growing the Irish language, strengthening partnerships with local and regional employers, and managing growth and governance.

Commenting today, Dr Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive of CMETB, said:
“We were delighted to welcome our colleagues from across the country to Cavan for this year’s ETBI Annual Congress. As Education and Training Boards take on an ever-growing role in delivering education, training and youth services on behalf of the State, strong governance and effective management have never been more important. This Congress provides a vital opportunity to share ideas, strengthen collaboration, and ensure our sector continues to grow in ways that best serve our learners and communities across Ireland”

Other highlights included a keynote address by renowned psychotherapist Dr Richard Hogan, a panel discussion with entrepreneur Sean Galagher and a musical performance by Music Generation Cavan and Monaghan Ensemble.
