Originally from Keady, Co. Armagh, Ms Nugent brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from St. Mary’s University College Belfast and a Master’s in Special Educational Needs and Inclusion from the University of Birmingham. She also holds Postgraduate qualifications in Blended Learning and Educational Leadership from Stranmillis University College, Belfast.

With an extensive career supporting autistic children and young people across the educational spectrum, including pre-school, mainstream primary and post-primary settings, special schools, and further education, Majella is passionate about inclusive education. Her experience is both professional and deeply personal, shaped by direct classroom involvement and close engagement with parents and allies of autistic learners.

Majella has also contributed significantly to curriculum development as a Professional Associate with CCEA (Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment) for learners with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD). She coordinated specialist training initiatives at Middletown Centre for Autism, including collaborative programmes on post-16 options and transitions to higher education, delivered in partnership with Ulster University and Trinity College Dublin.

Commenting on her appointment, Majella said:

“I am honoured to take on this role at Monaghan Community Special School at such a pivotal moment -as the school opens its doors for the very first time. It’s a rare and exciting opportunity to help build a school community from the ground up, one that celebrates each young person’s individuality and supports them to thrive in every aspect of their development.”

CMETB welcomes Ms Nugent to her new role and looks forward to the positive impact her leadership will bring to the school community.

Dr Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive at CMETB, welcomed the appointment, saying:
