Tribute to Patrick McArdle

Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) is deeply saddened by the passing of Patrick McArdle, Principal of Beech Hill College, Monaghan.

Patrick dedicated more than three decades of his life to education, serving students, staff and communities across County Monaghan with distinction, professionalism and genuine care. His passing represents a profound loss to Beech Hill College, CMETB and the wider community.

Patrick began his career in education at Beech Hill College in 1993 as a teacher of Technology (Metalwork). He subsequently served in Inver College, Carrickmacross, before returning to Beech Hill College as Deputy Principal in 2011. He was appointed Principal in 2016.

Throughout his career, Patrick was committed to creating opportunities for young people and fostering an environment where students could achieve their full potential. He was widely respected for the fairness, kindness and care he consistently demonstrated in his interactions with students. He led with a firm belief that every student should be supported and encouraged to succeed.

As Principal of Beech Hill College, Patrick played a significant role in the continued development and growth of the school and was deeply invested in its future. From 2020 onwards, he championed the current school extension project, recognising its importance in supporting future generations of students and staff. The impact of his leadership will continue to be reflected in the school’s ongoing development and in the strong foundations he helped establish for its future.

Patrick helped transform teaching and learning at Beech Hill College. In 2024, the Department of Education and Youth Inspectorate noted that the school was a hub of creativity and curricular innovation. Patrick had a remarkable ability to motivate both students and staff and was always open to new ideas that would enhance educational opportunities. Under his leadership, the curriculum continued to evolve, with subjects such as Polish and Lithuanian becoming available to students, alongside a range of new educational initiatives.

Patrick also recognised the important role that sport plays in the development and wellbeing of young people and was committed to enhancing the sporting facilities available to students. In recent years, he was successful in securing Sports Capital funding for the development of new facilities at the school, including a new handball wall which is currently under construction. His vision for Beech Hill College extended far beyond the classroom and was rooted in providing opportunities for students to thrive in all aspects of school life.

Those who worked alongside Patrick in Beech Hill College and across the wider CMETB school community speak of his support, thoughtful leadership and genuine interest in the wellbeing and success of others. He possessed a quiet strength and a deep commitment to the values of education. He will be remembered not only for his dedication and integrity, but also for his warmth, humour and trademark dry wit.

Few will fully appreciate the quiet support Patrick offered to colleagues in Beech Hill College and to fellow school leaders across CMETB. He was a trusted source of guidance and mentorship to others facing challenges. This support was always offered in a quiet and reflective manner that empowered those he worked with.

Dr Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive, CMETB, said:

“Patrick made an outstanding contribution to education throughout his career and was deeply committed to the students, staff and community of Beech Hill College. His leadership helped shape the school’s growth and success, and his influence will continue to inspire the school community in the years ahead. On behalf of CMETB, I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife, Mary, his children, Caleb, Zach, Nathan and Tim, his extended family, his colleagues, and all who will feel his loss.”

Ms Siobhán Sheerin Acting Principal, Beech Hill College, said

“Patrick understood that a school should be a place of learning, but also a place of laughter, belonging and care. He was never too important to share the fun with his students, and never too busy to treat every parent with courtesy and respect. He will be remembered not simply as a Principal, but as a good and decent man who brought out the best in this school community. He made every student, parent and staff member feel that they mattered and that is something we will never forget. On behalf of the Beech Hill College community I extend my deepest sympathies to Mary and his sons Caleb, Zach, Nathan and Tim, the extended Mc Ardle family and all who knew and loved him”

Patrick’s legacy extends far beyond buildings, programmes or achievements. It can be found in the lives of the countless students he taught, supported and inspired throughout his career, and in the colleagues whose lives were enriched through his friendship and guidance. The many tributes paid by the wider community in recent days are a testament to the impact he had on the lives of so many people.

His lasting contribution to Beech Hill College, CMETB and the wider community will be remembered for many years to come.
