Official Opening of St Augustine’s Adult Education Centre marks new Chapter for learning in Cavan

A special event was held recently to mark the official opening of the newly refurbished Adult Education Centre at St Augustine’s in Cavan Town. The occasion brought together representatives from CMETB, local stakeholders and community partners to recognise the transformation of a historic building into a modern and welcoming space for Adult Learning.

Proceedings were opened by MC Deirdre Byrne, Adult Education Officer for Cavan and Monaghan, who reflected on the long journey to establish a permanent home for Adult Education in Cavan. For many years, programmes were delivered across multiple locations, requiring constant adaptability from staff and learners. She noted that St Augustine’s now provides a central, visible and accessible space, bringing services together under one roof. She highlighted the wide range of programmes available, including literacy, ESOL, digital skills, childcare, healthcare, arts and guidance services, and acknowledged the commitment of staff and partners in bringing the project to completion.

Chief Executive Dr Fiona McGrath reflected on the history of St Augustine’s and the care taken in its restoration. She emphasised the importance of preserving its heritage while giving it a clear role into the future as a centre for learning and community engagement. She also acknowledged the contribution of all those involved in the project.

In her address, Dr Linda Pinkster, Director of Further Education and Training, spoke about the strong connection between the building’s renewal and the opportunities it now offers. She described St Augustine’s as “a place of second chances, fresh starts and lifelong learning”, highlighting its role as a dedicated home for Adult Education and a supportive environment where learners can progress with confidence.

Fr Kevin Fay, speaking on behalf of the Bishop, recalled the building’s long educational history and the early efforts to save it as its condition declined. He reflected on its transformation, noting how it once stood quiet and dark, and now once again holds light and learning, remarking that there were “no whiteboards, no Wi-Fi” in its earlier days.

A particularly meaningful contribution came from adult learner Julie Garland, who spoke about returning to education as an adult. She described her initial nerves and how she quickly realised she had entered something “very special”. Reflecting on her journey, she noted that completing her studies was once something she “never imagined possible”, and described St Augustine’s as “a place of hope”.

The commemorative plaque was unveiled by Chairperson of the CMETB Board Ms April Anna Barker together with Fr Kevin Fay, followed by guided tours of the building.

The redevelopment of St Augustine’s provides a dedicated and welcoming space for Adult Education in Cavan, strengthening access to learning and supporting the needs of the community now and into the future.
